Dear Colleagues,
As we celebrate the nursing profession this month, I want to focus on Proactive Board Membership—Preparing for the boards you want to serve on.
For nurses, serving on a board is a powerful way to shape organizations, advocate for meaningful change, and contribute valuable leadership and strategic insight. However, securing a seat requires preparation and intentional effort. Being proactive ensures you are ready when the right opportunity arises.
The proactive board membership approach starts by researching boards that align with your expertise and passion while understanding their mission, governance structure, and challenges. Next, focus on building relationships—network with current board members by attending events and participating in discussions to highlight your knowledge and commitment. Establishing your value will position you as a strong candidate when openings emerge. Enhancing leadership skills is also essential. Seek governance training, strengthen financial literacy, and consider joining committees or advisory boards to gain experience and broaden connections. The Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC) resources are a great place to start.
Since serving on the NOBC Board of Directors as the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) representative, I have had the opportunity to advise certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), nurse anesthesiology residents, nurses, and nursing students that “even if now is not the right time in your life for board service, it is never too early to plan for when it will be.” A proactive approach ensures you are in the right place at the right time, well before a vacancy appears.
Best wishes on your journey to board service,
Jana Bailey, DNP, APRN, CRNA
