Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFACs)

Enhancing Patient Care: The Vital Role of PFACs and Volunteer Nurses

This initiative highlights the transformative impact of Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFACs) in creating a more patient-centered healthcare system. Supported by AARP and the Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC), the program emphasizes the importance of including nurses—especially volunteer nurses—on PFACs to improve care quality, communication, and patient safety, particularly for older adults.

Through real-world examples and nurse testimonials, the program showcases how PFACs influence hospital policies, enhance patient experiences, and empower caregivers. Nurses bring clinical insight and advocacy to the table, making them essential members of these councils. The initiative also offers opportunities for nurses to grow professionally while making a meaningful difference in their communities.

Participants are encouraged to:

  • Join the PFAC Peer Network
  • Volunteer to serve on a PFAC
  • Connect institutions with nurse volunteers
  • Support the development or revitalization of PFACs

Together, we can elevate patient care and strengthen the caregiver experience nationwide.
