Which Nursing Organizations are you currently a member of: ANA, AORN

Board(s) currently serving on: St. Rose Dominiican

Tell us about your journey to the boardroom. What inspired you to seek a leadership position?

I wanted to be part of the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?

I participate in daily learning opportunities. If a nurse does not do this, it impacts the care continuum. By the year 2025, millions of years of nursing knowledge will be lost due to the retirement of baby boomers. We have to recoup that knowledge and somehow pass along those skills, knowledge and experience.

What impact have you had serving on a board? Example?

I have been able to expand the recruitment and educational planning for nurses in our region.

What advice would you give someone going into a board leadership position for the first time?

Be thoughtful and speak up about nursing, healthcare, the value a nurse brings to the table, and patient care. Engage people in the journey and help them understand what a nurse does and why they do it.

What are a few resources you would recommend to someone looking to gain insight into becoming a better leader and eventually obtaining a board position?

Research the finance and business background to better understand the financial foundation of the organization, healthcare in general, and the business side of operating major organizations.

Why do you feel it is important for nurses to serve on boards?

The future of healthcare is very uncertain. Nurses provide stability and hourly care in every healthcare setting. It is not a role that will be eliminated.

What do you think is the most significant barrier to nurses serving on boards?

The glass ceiling.
