Tell us about your journey to the boardroom. What inspired you to seek a leadership position?

I am passionate about advocating for my profession and patients.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?

I have continued school- completing a doctorate in nursing currently and also participate in committees so I can learn from others.

What impact have you had serving on a board? Example?

I have had a long history on the state board of CANP so have had the ability to impact practice improvements for nurse practitioners across the state.

What advice would you give someone going into a board leadership position for the first time?

Ask a lot of questions and listen more than you talk.

What are a few resources you would recommend to someone looking to gain insight into becoming a better leader and eventually obtaining a board position?

Why do you feel it is important for nurses to serve on boards?

I feel strongly that nurses bring a unique perspective to boards; our connection with the patient makes us all advocates and nursing is a role that naturally brings out leadership skills.

What do you think is the most significant barrier to nurses serving on boards?

Many nurses I have approached don’t feel they have enough time or don’t see how it is beneficial to participate in something outside of work time.
